Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. After her father died as a Carnival barker when Ruth was just an infant, she had to help keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth lived in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. However, she was only in school for a couple of years, then going on to pursue an acting profession. It was not without problems. When she was offered a job in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she was unable to secure opportunities on stage. She then worked as an hat-checker at the nightclub before calling the shots and moving back to Boston. The city of Boston was in which she was employed during the late night, she was an actor for New England Repertory Company and during the day, was an usherette. She took classes in drama in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
